Poem 5

ode to ee cummings to follow . . .

sleep with you
(c) Mary ElizaBeth Peters, April 2010, after e.e. cummings

i sleep
with you by my side
(i sleep with you when you are far from me)
i cannot sleep without you
(whenever i sleep you sleep, my one)
the night is not night when i am without you

i cry
one night by myself
(and the night may come soon, my love)
i will wake and not remember you
(nor you remember me, your love)
somewhere sleeping without you

and you are the thing that makes the earth be born
and you are the one that creates the first sunbeam
and you are the dear whose dear is sinking slowly
now you are the wind that moves

i wake
the one who is
(who is and was and will be)
birthing beaming sinking freely
(more freely ever still)
and we are the ones who knew

(you dear and me dear, who knew the oldest truth)
the sun does not come up each morning
(unless you watch and you wait and the warmth comes rising)

it is still a secret among them (this is the secret among them)
don't tell and don't ever tell that I said not to if you do (but do not)
the sun only rises for certainty that its light will be
taken(given)taken(given)again and again

for the sake of a two lives that will make something of the light

i sleep with you
(i sleep with you when you are far from me)
i cannot wake without you

sleep with you - ORIGINAL
(c) Mary ElizaBeth Peters, April 2010,
after e.e. cummings

i sleep
with you by my side
(i sleep with you when you are far from me)
i cannot sleep without you
(whenever i sleep you sleep, my one;
and the night is not night when i am without you, one)
i cry
one night b y myself
(and the night may come soon, my love)
i will wake and not remember you
(nor you remember me, your love)
you will not sleep for crying because
i am somewhere sleeping without you
(sleeping without you far or near to me)

and you are the thing that makes the earth be born
and you are the one that creates the first sunbeam
and you are the dear whose dear is sinking slowly
now you are the wind that moves

i wake
and i am the one who is
(who is and was and will be)
birthing beaming sinking freely
(more freely ever still)
and we are the ones
(you dear and me dear)
who were the ones who knew
(and new and new and now the oldest truth)
the sun does not come up each morning unless you watch
(you watch and wait and then the warmth comes rising)
